The Neck and Chin Submental Liposuction Process
Consult
This will be your initial visit, expect to provide your complete medical history, including all your medications, allergies, and if you have had any previous surgeries. Upon deciding your candidacy based on the elasticity of the submental area, you will also undergo an extensive physical exam and blood tests before your surgeon takes photographs to aid in planning and performing your liposuction procedure. Afterwards, you will be given important instructions to prepare for the chin liposuction procedure, including cautions about taking certain medications, drinking alcohol, as well as protocols for shaving and using antibacterial soap.
Procedure
First, the area will be numbed with local anesthetic. Next your surgeon will make minimal small incisions to insert the closed system cannulas, which are small tubes. A fluid injection technique is injected into the area, removing the fat deposits as the surgeon reshapes the neck, chin, and jaw. Following this process, your surgeon will suture the skin at the incision points back together and apply a bandage or surgical garment for sterilization and to contain swelling.
Recovery
One of the benefits of neck and chin liposuction versus a traditional liposuction procedure is that it is a far less invasive procedure. Some swelling and bruising for the first week of recovery is likely, though for most patients this dissipates quickly with most returning to work or regular activities within four days.
Post Surgery
After the procedure in office follow ups are: one day, one week, and one month following the procedure. After that visit, further appointments will be advised by the surgeon. And while the recovery tends to be quick after neck liposuction, more physically strenuous activities are advised to be avoided for up to two weeks
Good candidates for this procedure have good skin elasticity, and are generally under the age of 50. (Please consult us about similar procedures like a neck lift if you fall outside of these better intended parameters).
Both procedures can lift and improve the appearance of the neck, chin and jawline. However the neck liposuction procedure removes fat deposits without any additional skin-tightening or lifting of the skin and muscles of the neck, which is what occurs in a neck lift. Both of these procedures can also be combined, pending candidacy during a consult visit.
Local or general anesthesia may be provided during the procedure. Which anesthesia is the best option will be determined between the patient, anesthesiologist, and surgeon. As always at the South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery, general anesthesia is administered by a professional M.D. Anesthesiologist.
The incisions made for the procedure are only about 2mm in size, and are always located under the chin out of sight. Speak to your physician or our skilled staff about tips to lessen scar visibility, and they could become virtually invisible.
Yes, like all liposuction, neck liposuction permanently removes fat cells. However, it does not actively prohibit the growth of new fat cells in the body that have the ability to grow if weight is gained.
Yes, due to the procedure’s minimal invasive nature, patients return home immediately.
There is virtually no pain due to the minimally invasive nature of the procedure with small incisions. Slight discomfort might be felt, but usually dissipates within a few days.
