A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is a body contouring procedure that removes excess skin from the midsection and tightens the internal abdominal wall. The result is a smoother, firmer, and more toned abdomen.
These are concerns that often persist even with an active and healthy lifestyle.
A tummy tuck can be performed using several techniques — ranging from a mini tummy tuck to a Fleur-de-Lis tummy tuck for more extensive cases. During your consultation at South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery in Miami, FL, your plastic surgeon will evaluate your anatomy and determine the technique best suited to your goals and concerns.

A tummy tuck also includes liposuction of the flanks to achieve a more defined, hourglass figure. The procedure tightens the abdominal muscles, removes excess skin, and improves posture and daily comfort. Pregnancy or prolonged pressure on the midsection can weaken or separate the abdominal muscles — a condition known as diastasis recti. This affects appearance, posture, mobility, and can cause lower back discomfort. A tummy tuck repairs the muscle separation, restoring core strength and physical comfort.
Excess skin folds around the midsection can cause irritation, trap sweat, and lead to rashes from persistent friction. A tummy tuck removes this excess skin, creating a cleaner, smoother mid-area that is easier to care for.
Even with a healthy diet and regular exercise, excess tissue can cause the abdomen to look irregular or disproportionate. A tummy tuck removes the excess skin and tightens the underlying tissue, creating a flatter, firmer abdomen.
Because a tummy tuck is paired with liposuction of the flanks, the procedure strengthens the abdominal area while also creating a more defined waistline. This combination produces a sculpted, hourglass contour that fits your natural anatomy.
The type of tummy tuck you receive determines your incision pattern and final results. For most patients, the horizontal incision is placed along the bikini line so it can be easily hidden under clothing and swimwear.
During your virtual consultation, your surgeon will walk you through each option and recommend a surgical plan based on your anatomy and areas of concern. Scar placement is always prioritized to be as discreet and low-profile as possible.
The most common type of tummy tuck. A horizontal incision runs from hip to hip, placed low across the bikini line. This approach allows the surgeon to remove excess skin, repair the abdominal wall (diastasis recti), and reposition the belly button if needed. Liposuction of the flanks is included to sculpt the waistline.
A smaller, shorter horizontal incision placed below the belly button. Best for patients with mild to moderate skin laxity in the lower abdomen who do not need muscle repair or belly button repositioning. This is a less invasive procedure with a shorter recovery time. Liposuction of the flanks can be added if desired.
Designed for patients with significant excess skin around the waistline, often after major weight loss. The horizontal incision extends around the hips to contour the flanks and lower back in addition to the front of the abdomen. This technique includes abdominal muscle repair and liposuction of the flanks.
An advanced technique for patients who have experienced massive weight loss. This approach combines a horizontal incision with a vertical incision running up the center of the abdomen to the belly button. It removes extreme excess skin both vertically and horizontally, repairs the abdominal muscles, and may include liposuction of the flanks. Recovery time is longer due to the extent of the procedure.

Surgery Day
A tummy tuck takes around 2-3 hours, depending on the complexity of the procedure and whether the abdominal wall is being repaired and is paired with liposuction. This surgery is performed under general anesthesia to guarantee the patient’s comfort and safety. This is an outpatient procedure, so you will be going home the same day. You will go home wearing a compression garment, and our post-operative team will provide you with detailed care instructions
1 Day Post Op
It is highly important to prioritize rest and limit movement for the next 24-48 hrs. You will feel swelling, tightness, and discomfort around the incision and abdominal area. Your surgeon highly advises taking walks slightly hunched to support blood circulation and avoid tension on your incision. Pain medication and wearing your compression garment will help you control any pain, discomfort, and support healing
1 Week Post Op
You will have a post-operative appointment in our Miami, FL office one week after your procedure to monitor your recovery and the area where the incision is. Most patients start feeling more comfortable walking more upright and being slightly more mobile. If you’re wearing drains, during this visit, they are removed
1 Month Post Op
Swelling starts going down, and you will feel stronger in your midsection area and with more stability. Most patients can return to their daily lifestyle and light activity; non-strenuous activity is still not recommended at this time. Very light exercise might be allowed, but it will all depend on your surgeon’s advice. This is why it is very important not to miss any post-op visits
2-12 Months Post Op
During this stage, the last residue of swelling is almost gone, and you’re closer to your final shape and result. Incisions will gradually fade with proper care and following the post-operative instructions. The abdominal contour becomes more visible, and you start feeling stronger from the inside out. Most patients get to see their final results and feel fully recovered by the 6-12 month mark

A tummy tuck is an excellent approach for those patients who are looking to remove any excess skin, restore and re-strengthen their internal abdominal walls, reposition their belly button, and achieve an overall stronger core.
Great candidates are those who deal with loose or sagging skin, weak, stretched, or separated abdominal wall (diastasis recti), or stubborn fat that can’t get removed with exercise or diet. This is a highly requested procedure by people who have experienced major life-changing events, like childbirth and massive weight loss.
A tummy tuck is a more complex procedure that helps patients remove excess skin, repair the internal abdominal wall, target skin laxity, and can even reposition the belly button. This type of procedure is also great to combine with liposuction of the flanks. On the other hand, liposuction is a procedure that removes extra fat pockets on a smaller scale; for this type of procedure is not recommended to have any type of loose skin or weakened muscles.
A tummy tuck procedure can take around 2-3 hours, depending on the complexity of your case, the amount of fat and excess skin that needs to be removed, if the abdominal wall is being repaired, and if the patient combines it with liposuction of the flanks. This surgery is performed under general anesthesia to guarantee the patient’s comfort and safety.
The stretch marks around the skin that is removed will be eliminated with abdominoplasty. Usually, these are prominent around the lower area of the abdomen and around the belly button. However, any stretch marks that are on tissue that will be kept will not be eliminated. A tummy tuck can significantly improve the skin texture and overall appearance after surgery. Laser treatments can be offered to eliminate any remaining stretch marks.
Tummy tuck incisions are usually placed around the lower abdomen, right above the pubic area. This strategic position helps the patient to hide the scar under clothing like underwear and swimwear. We offer a variety of incisions depending on your goals. Your abdominoplasty surgeon will help you determine which approach best fits you, your needs, and your anatomy.
A tummy tuck is an extensive surgery; most patients can experience moderate discomfort, especially in the first couple of days to a week. Some discomfort, swelling, and tightness around the area are completely normal. Our post-operative team will prescribe you pain medication to manage any type of discomfort. Within a few weeks, most patients start feeling more comfortable and can return to normal, non-strenuous activities.
Diastasis recti occurs when the internal abdominal wall separates, stretches, and weakens due to pregnancy or prolonged pressure on the mid-area. A tummy tuck directly targets this concern, which not only affects patients’ physical appearance but also affects their posture and can cause discomfort in the lower back. It is the most effective way of fixing the problem from the inside out.
The first stage of tummy tuck recovery can take around 2-4 weeks. Here is where activity is limited, walking is always encouraged, and patients need to prioritize rest. Swelling gradually subsides, but it takes months. Most patients can feel completely healed and are able to see their final results around the 6-12 months mark.
Small drains are left for most cases after abdominoplasty; this helps to avoid any fluid buildup beneath the skin. These drains are temporary and are usually removed during your one-week post-op visit. However, there are some cases where drains are not necessary; your surgeon will recommend and decide the best option for you and your recovery.
Yes, however, our team of expert plastic surgeons recommends waiting to get a tummy tuck until you’re done and have completed your family. Pregnancy can reverse the results by stretching the abdominal wall again. Abdominoplasty does not interfere with fertility. Your surgeon can also organize a timeline that works for you, your pregnancy, recovery, and overall health.
Tummy tuck results are long-lasting. Your surgeon will also explain that some adjustments to your lifestyle might be necessary. A healthy lifestyle is recommended to make sure to maintain the final results. Regular exercise will also help to maintain your new core strength. These small changes will guarantee a longer-lasting result.
Yes, one of the main concerns that are handled when having a tummy tuck is the repair of the abdominal wall, which automatically helps to have a better posture and eliminate back pain. A strong core is your base for this, and is why it is very important to express your main concerns to your surgeon so they can create the perfect approach for you and your goals.
At South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery, in Miami, FL, a tummy tuck surgery starts at $2,999 (excluding anesthesia and surgeon’s fees). Once you are done with your consultation, your coordinator will provide your personalized quote. Your final price depends on our personal surgical plan, how extensive your case is, and if you’re combining other procedure with your tummy tuck surgery.
The main difference lies in how much skin and muscle correction is needed. A full tummy tuck addresses the entire abdomen—from the upper and lower stomach—and includes muscle tightening and repositioning of the belly button. A mini tummy tuck, on the other hand, focuses only on the lower abdomen below the navel, ideal for patients with mild skin laxity or a small “pooch.” Because the incision is shorter and recovery is quicker, your surgeon will help determine which option fits your anatomy and aesthetic goals best.
Yes, a tummy tuck can be safely combined with complementary body contouring procedures like liposuction or a breast lift/augmentation for enhanced results—often referred to as a Mommy Makeover. However, for patient safety, a tummy tuck cannot be combined with a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), since both procedures require different recovery positions and care. During your consultation, your surgeon will help design a customized surgical plan that maximizes results while keeping your safety and recovery top priority.
