3 Holiday Treats

Responsible Holiday Snacking

The holiday season is back and you’re probably going to be spending a lot of time under the Christmas tree with friends, eating all kinds of Christmas treats. Unfortunately, attending too many holiday parties can lead to frustrating results like gaining weight and losing the contour you achieved with plastic surgery. This year try snacking smarter by choosing healthier holiday desserts options when possible so that you don’t undo any work from surgery. Reduce holiday baking to a minimum and instead choose the healthy dessert options we have prepared for you in this article.

Holiday Treat: Baked Apples With Cinnamonnnamon

Baked apples are a sensible treat any time of year, but adding cinnamon to them will remind you of Christmas. To prepare this tasty treat — which is a good source of fiber and several vitamins, including vitamins A, C and E — core an apple, keeping the bottom intact. You can add spices, such as cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg, and a touch of honey or agave nectar to the empty core. Bake them in an oven that’s been preheated to 375 degrees Fahrenheit, for about 45 minutes. These seasonal treats are not just tasty — they smell like your mom’s kitchen on Christmas Day.

Holiday Treat: Dark Chocolate

Instead of reaching for another Christmas cookie, try snacking on one or two squares of dark chocolate. Unlike the empty calories in many cakes and cookies, dark chocolate that is comprised of at least 75-percent cacao contains antioxidant qualities that help fight the free radicals roaming around inside our bodies. Dark chocolate also contains fiber, iron, magnesium, and several other nutrients. Not to mention, dark chocolate has been shown to provide cardiovascular health benefits. Just make sure to enjoy this treat in moderation.

Holiday Treat: Air-Popped Popcorn

Most people have fallen victim to the multi-gallon tin of popcorn that can be purchased in many drug stores around the holidays, at one time or another. You promise yourself that you will only eat a handful of the caramel- and cheese-laden popcorn, only to find that you have consumed about a gallon of the stale snack in one sitting. This year, try air-popping your own popcorn for a healthier snack option.

Air-popped popcorn is a good source of fiber, which regulates digestion and helps keep you feeling satisfied. Also, by popping your own popcorn, you can be sure that no chemicals were added to your snack, as is often the case with microwaveable popcorn. If you love chocolate-covered popcorn, make sure to use dark chocolate and keep your servings small.

For added flavor, sprinkle on a dash of truffle salt or some parsley and paprika. Cumin also makes an interesting addition to air-popped popcorn. You can even wrap up several of your homemade flavors in individually sized holiday gift bags to give away as presents.

Will I benefit from Liposuction?

Is Liposuction Right for You?At South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery, we understand why liposuction can seem like a panacea for weight loss. Although liposuction is an effective means of eliminating stubborn pockets of unwanted fat that are resistant to diet and exercise, it is not meant for everyone. Here are some questions to ask yourself to help you determine whether you would benefit from liposuction.

Am I at or just slightly above my ideal body weight?

If you answered “yes” to this question, you might be an appropriate candidate for liposuction. Liposuction is not designed as a tool for substantial weight loss. Instead, it is best performed for individuals who are at or just above their ideal body weight but have localized fat deposits that do not respond to a healthy lifestyle.

One reason that liposuction is not intended as a tool for major weight loss is that removing too much fat at one time can cause serious surgical complications. Not to mention, removing too much fat in one instance with liposuction will leave patients with loose excess skin that will not shrink down to a smaller size or shape to fit the new body contour.

Am I at a stable body weight that I feel I can maintain after liposuction surgery?

It is important that you are at a stable body weight that you feel comfortable maintaining after liposuction; because, although any fat that is removed with liposuction will not return, regaining more than about 10 percent of your body weight may cause the residual fat cells to grow larger or new ones to crop up.

Do I smoke?

If you answered “yes” to this question, you must next ask yourself whether you are prepared to quit smoking for several weeks before and after the liposuction procedure. Why? The answer is that oxygen is essential to your body’s healing process; without it, the tissues take longer to heal. Smoking robs your blood of oxygen, instead replacing it with toxins. Smoking also causes blood vessels to constrict, so they cannot deliver vital oxygen to the healing tissues. In addition, smoking can cause serious surgical complications, including reopening the wounds at your incision sites. For these reasons, you must be prepared to quit smoking if you are a smoker who is seeking liposuction.

Do I have sound skin elasticity?

Try this: Pull on the skin on your abdomen. Does it snap back into place when you let it go? If so, your skin elasticity is most likely good. It is important for liposuction patients to have good skin elasticity, so their skin will “bounce back” to a smaller size once the fat has been removed.

Patients with poor skin elasticity may be better suited for another body contouring procedure, such as abdominoplasty (“tummy tuck” surgery), which is designed to eliminate loose excess skin and repair the underlying tissue structures.

Find Out Whether You Are a Suitable Candidate

Although these are helpful preliminary questions to ask yourself when considering liposuction, the only way to establish with certainty whether you would benefit from the procedure is to visit a board-certified plastic surgeon. A qualified plastic surgeon can evaluate your physique, listen to you cosmetic concerns and determine whether you are a suitable candidate for the procedure.

Botox and Cancer

Cosmetic injection of botoxWhether you’ve had Botox treatment or not, you’re probably familiar with its wrinkle-smoothing powers. A purified type of botulinum toxin type A, Botox is injected into the facial muscles to relax them and even out wrinkles and lines. It works by blocking the nerve signals and weakening the muscles so they cannot contract. This results in fewer wrinkles and a refreshed appearance.

Scientists Test New Use for Botox

BBC, Fox News and other outlets recently reported on a potentially exciting new use for Botox: fighting cancer.

Botox, which is also FDA approved to treat migraines, muscle spasms and excessive sweating, could be used in the future to halt the development of stomach tumors and make them more vulnerable to chemotherapy.

Stomach cancer is traditionally difficult to treat because gastric tumors do not respond well to chemotherapy. Also, nerve signaling can stimulate tumor formation.

Teams from Columbia University Medical Center and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology set out to determine whether Botox could block these nerve signals. In their research, they found that Botox injections did stop the growth of new tumors in mice with advanced stomach cancer.

They looked at the role of the vagus nerve, which runs from the brain to the digestive system. Previous studies showed that severing these nerves could halt cancer growth in mice; scientists point out that this is an invasive treatment option. The latest study suggested that paralyzing the vagus nerves with Botox injections could provide the same benefit (albeit temporarily).

One of the scientists, Dr. Timothy Wang, told the BBC: “At least in the early phase, if you [disrupt the nerve] the tumor becomes much more responsive to chemotherapy, so we don’t see this as a single cure, but making current and future treatments more effective.”

The next step is to test Botox on people who have chemotherapy-resistant gastric ulcers.

“I think this has a lot of potential and in a decade or two I can see these pathways being targeted,” said Dr. Wang.

Botox Continues to Be Used Cosmetically

While Botox undergoes further testing as a potential cancer treatment, it will continue to be used to reduce the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles. At the South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery, we can help you look younger, happier and more rested with Botox injections.

woman holding black flops

Florida’s many beaches are home to scores of women (and men!) with beautiful and healthy-looking bodies. One of the most envy-inducing attributes is a voluptuous backside. From time to time, you might find yourself glancing appreciatively at a curvaceous buttocks and yearning for a similar feature. Perhaps you put in hours at the gym doing cardio, lunges and squats, but simply cannot achieve the round and lifted buttocks you desire.

If you were not born with natural curves, you can still enjoy an attractive backside, thanks to a cosmetic procedure called the Brazilian Butt Lift, offered at the South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery.

What is the Brazilian Butt Lift?

Brazilian Butt Lift is a type of buttock augmentation, which the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery claims is the fastest-growing procedure in the country. Buttock augmentation is intended to improve a flat, small or sagging behind.

Brazilian Butt Lift involves a two-part process. First, the surgeon uses liposuction techniques to remove unwanted surplus fat from a donor area of the body — like the abdomen, hips, back and thighs. The fat is purified and prepared for re-injection. Then, the surgeon injects small amounts of the fat into the buttocks, focusing on the upper quadrant to give the butt a “lifted” appearance.

Brazilian Butt Lift essentially combines two plastic surgery procedures and requires only one recovery period with a short downtime.

Benefits of the Brazilian Butt Lift

The Brazilian Butt Lift procedure has earned widespread attention because it’s not just a buttock augmentation surgery, but also a body sculpting procedure. To be clear, the first step of the procedure involves liposuction of the area around the buttocks, including the flanks and lower back, which are often “problem areas” that don’t respond to diet or exercise. This strategy makes the buttocks fuller and the surrounding areas look leaner, resulting in a beautiful “S”-shaped” curve. Another benefit of the Brazilian Butt Lift is that using autologous (the patient’s own) fat reduces the risk of infection or adverse reaction to a foreign medical device like an artificial buttock implant.

Busy Life and Cosmetic Surgery

shutterstock_11343970A number of our patients at the South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery enjoy full and busy lives, with professional careers, family obligations and commitments to social and community activities. These individuals are not immune, however, to the signs of aging or the effects of pregnancy or gravity, which is why they need our help improving their appearance through plastic surgery. The challenge is fitting treatment into their busy schedules.

The most time-consuming part of having cosmetic surgery is the recovery period. Some of our patients simply do not have the time to recover at home for multiple days or weeks. To work around this obstacle, we offer a selection of procedures that require little to no post-operative downtime.

If you are interested in erasing signs of facial aging, eliminating areas of stubborn fat or simply looking like a better version of yourself, but your schedule doesn’t permit for cosmetic surgery, here are some minimal downtime treatment options to consider:

Body Sculpting

Smartlipo Triplex uses laser energy to heat and melt unwanted surplus fat into liquid form, so that it can be removed from the body more easily. Smartlipo can be used to improve the contours of the buttocks, thighs, abdomen, hips, knees or arms. Thanks to the nature of Smartlipo technology, treatment is not painful, nor does it put significant stress on the body’s tissues. Therefore, recovery downtime is much shorter than that of traditional liposuction.

Cellulaze also uses laser energy, but in a different capacity. Cellulaze is a cellulite reduction treatment that treats the deep underlying cause: connective fibers that become rigid, and pockets of fat that press up against those fibers to create the lumpy, dimpled appearance of cellulite. Our Cellulaze patients see incredible results without significant downtime.

Facial Rejuvenation

One of the best ways to erase the signs of facial aging and enjoy a refreshed, rested appearance is through injectable treatments. We offer a suite of safe and effective injectable products, including Botox Cosmetic, Juvederm, Radiesse and Restylane. Depending on the product, injectable treatment will smooth wrinkles, fill in facial folds and creases or restore youthful fullness to areas of the face.

In some cases, we might recommend combining injectable products for what we call the “liquid face lift” and “injectable facelift.” These minimally invasive procedures will lift and rejuvenate the facial skin without requiring much downtime afterward.

Laser Treatment

Self-conscious of skin imperfections, unwanted hair or visible veins? We offer a full selection of laser treatments to clear skin, remove pesky hair/veins/tattoos and even treat acne — and you’ll be pleased to learn these procedures require little to no recovery period. For example, the Affirm laser is perfect for patients who desire facial rejuvenation but aren’t quite ready for facelift surgery. And, intense pulsed light (IPL) photofacials treat skin affected by acne, sun damage or pigmented/vascular lesions.

Selfies cause rise in Plastic Surgery

young woman lookingIt’s impossible to scroll through your social media feeds without encountering a “selfie” — i.e., a picture that someone takes of themselves and posts to garner reactions from followers. If you believe selfies are only a passing trend, it might surprise you to learn that they have some long-lasting influence.

According to a report released by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), one in three plastic surgeons surveyed have seen an increase in requests for plastic surgery, as a result of patients being more aware of their looks because of social media.

“Social platforms like Instagram, Snapchat and the iPhone app Selfie.im, which are solely image-based, force patients to hold a microscope up to their own image and often look at it with a more self-critical eye than ever before,” said Dr. Edward Farrior, the president of AAFPRS.

When ABC News reported on this trend back in August, one New York plastic surgeon told reporters, “I’ve noticed over the last six months [that] patients actually bring a selfie to the examining room. They show me what bothers them and what they would like to fix.” Another New York City plastic surgeon added, “I personally would see two to three patients a day that have come in from selfies and social media.”

Most Requested Procedures

Rhinoplasty and Botox injections are among the most requested procedures to make selfies look more attractive. Rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping surgery, improves an oversized or crooked nose, or addresses an unflattering feature of the nose such as an upturned tip or uneven nostrils. Botox treatment temporarily smoothes wrinkles and lines around the forehead and eyes.

Hand rejuvenation is popular among women that get engaged and want their hands to look beautiful in photos of their wedding rings.

The AAFPRS report contained another interesting and possibly related trend: plastic surgery patients are trending younger. More than half of the doctors AAFPRS surveyed said they saw an increase in patients under 30 requesting plastic surgery and non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatment. Since social media and selfies are particularly popular with the younger crowd, this could be a contributing factor.

How Cosmetic Enhancement Can Help You

Selfies and social media aren’t the only reasons to pursue cosmetic surgery. People want to look great and feel great in real life — not just their virtual lives. If you feel self-conscious about your appearance, cosmetic enhancement can potentially have a tremendous effect on your self-esteem and overall quality of life. Think of the confidence you will project when you finally feel good about you appearance.

At the South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery, we are happy to meet with anyone considering plastic surgery, and go over our wide selection of surgical and non-surgical options. After learning more about you and your unique cosmetic goals, we can recommend a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

After Cosmetic Surgery Care: Things You Should And Shouldn’t Do After Plastic Surgery

habits to avoid after plastic surgeryThe skilled plastic surgeons at the South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery do everything in their power to help ensure patients achieve the best possible aesthetic results from plastic surgery. However, it is important that patients do their part as well. This includes avoiding certain activities after cosmetic surgery, especially the first several weeks of the recovery process. The following are three things you should never do in the first few weeks after your cosmetic procedure.

What Not To Do After Cosmetic Surgery?

Smoke

If you need another reason to abstain from smoking, this is it: smoking constricts blood vessels, making it difficult for the body to deliver nutrient-rich blood to the healing tissues in your treatment area. It also deprives the blood of life-giving oxygen, and instead fills the blood with noxious chemicals. Smoking can lead to several postoperative complications, including excessive scarring, poor wound healing, and other side effects.

Expose Incision Sites to the Sun

With proper care, the scars from your incisions should eventually fade to match the color of the surrounding skin, so they are nearly invisible to others. However, even 20 minutes of sun exposure can cause your incision scars to rise up from the surface of the skin and become red. Once this happens, it is nearly impossible to improve the look of scars. If you don’t want telltale signs of your procedure (i.e., red, raised scars), be sure to keep your incision sites out of the sun for at least six months after your procedure. You can do this by staying in the shade or covering incision sites with clothes or sunscreen with a broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or more. (Be sure to reapply your sunscreen frequently, especially after swimming or sweating.)

Ignore Your Plastic Surgeon’s Instructions

Besides the post-operative doctor visits, post operative care also includes what patients do at home during the surgery recovery. In general, you should follow all your plastic surgeon’s postoperative instructions as closely as possible to ensure you achieve the best results possible. This includes wearing any surgical garments (e.g., surgical bra, compression garments) for as long as directed by the surgeon, massaging the treatment area if directed, Pain management Рtaking any pain medications, antibiotics, and/or supplements as instructed, etc. If you ignore your knowledgeable surgeon’s instructions, you will probably not achieve the results you desire and potentially extend the recovery times.

5 Fall Skin Care Tips

Fall Skin Care Tips

Summer is almost over, and fall is nearly here. Not only is it time to break out your sweaters, but it’s also time to re-evaluate your skincare routine. No matter what your skin type is, what may have worked well during the hot summer months may not benefit your skin during the cooler, less humid autumn months. Below The South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery shares these five fall skincare tips to keep your skin healthy and glowing as the seasons change.

#1: Reach for the Oil

We realize that you probably spent much of the summer trying to keep oily skin at bay, so it may sound counterintuitive to reach for an oil-based moisturizing product now. However, using an oil-based moisturizer will give your skin the extra moisture it needs now that humidity levels are starting to wane. Facial oils provide mega moisture while still feeling light on your face. Also, facial oils are absorbed into the skin more quickly than heavier, cream-based moisturizers, so you won’t have to wait as long before applying your makeup. It is especially beneficial for people with dry skin, who struggle to find the right skin care products. Use a good face mask weekly to replenish moisture that is lost over time.

#2: Don’t Stop Using Sunscreen

The sun may not feel as strong during fall as it did during summer, but it never stops emitting harsh ultraviolet (UV) rays that can cause sun damage, skin cancer, and premature signs of aging, such as hyperpigmentation (dark spots). That is why you should never forget to apply sun protection. To protect your skin, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (with an SPF of at least 15) before you leave the house each day, even if it looks overcast outside.

#3: Keep Your Cuticles in Mind

Dry, rough cuticles are a telltale sign of colder temperatures. This autumn, get into the habit of rubbing cuticle oil onto your cuticles a few times a week. Being meticulous about applying cuticle oil now will help you avoid painful cracked skin later. By winter, your hands will thank you!

#4: Protect Your Lips

It is easy to forget that you have delicate sensitive skin on your lips, too. Avoid flakey, cracked lips by applying a lip balm regularly. You may also want to exfoliate your lips every couple of weeks by lightly brushing them with a soft, dry toothbrush. Taking good care of your lips this fall will make them soft and kissable in time for mistletoe season.

#5: Renew Your Skin

Autumn is a symbol of renewal. If the beating sun wreaked havoc on your skin this summer, perhaps it’s time to renew your skin. At the South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery, we offer several non-surgical cosmetic treatment options to give you refreshed, revitalized healthy skin.

Laser skin resurfacing treatments are designed to slough off the dead skin cells that can clog up pores and make your skin look dull. We also offer intense pulsed light (IPL) photo facials to improve the look of fine lines and hyperpigmentation. Whatever your skin care needs are, we have an effective treatment option for you whether it is for preventive measures, anti-aging, or rejuvenation.

Cheek Enhancement Options: Fillers, Surgery & More

cheek augmentation proceduresNearly everyone finds beautifully defined features such as sharp cheekbones and prominent chin lines attractive. Unfortunately, not everyone is born with angular cheekbones positioned high in the cheek area.  Luckily, South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery offers both surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures to help you achieve the volume in the cheeks  that you desire.

What is Cheek Enhancement?

One of the options to restore a volume loss in the cheeks is the use of implants or Cheek Enhancement Surgey. It is a perfect procedure for people who seek a long-term result with a minimal downtime. During surgery the implant is placed through a small incision in the mouth, lower eyelid, or hairline. All types of incision allow the surgeon to hide the scar and make the result look as natural as possible.  Cheek implants are an effective way to achieve pronounced cheekbones that provide a more aesthetically pleasing contour throughout the entire face. Your cosmetic surgeon may also recommend an adjunct chin implant procedure to balance out facial features and optimize the aesthetic results of the cheek augmentation  procedure.

Cheek Enhancement Options & their Pros & Cons

If you’re not ready for a surgical procedure but want to enhance your facial features, injectable cheek enhancement fillers might be the perfect solution. Non surgical cheek enhancement provides instant results, are minimally invasive, and do not require downtime. Injectable fillers can do wonders when it comes to adding subtle definition to the cheekbones and enhancing the look. .

One of the most popular products used for cheek augmentation is JUVEDERM VOLUMA XC. Like its predecessor Juvéderm XC, Juvéderm Voluma XC is an injectable hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler. (Hyaluronic acid [HA] is a substance that naturally occurs  in our bodies.   It helps your skin retain moisture and volume, as well as boosts collagen production and provides youthful glow.) While Juvéderm XC is intended for use in filling in fine lines and wrinkles, Juvéderm Voluma XC is the first facial filler that is FDA approved exclusively for use in enhancing the contour of the cheeks. In addition, by enhancing the cheekbone area, Juvéderm Voluma XC provides a subtle lift throughout the cheek area and the lower region of the face, smoothing parentheses lines and nasolabial folds. Thus, some patients may be able to avoid  other facial rejuvenation procedures  simply by undergoing Juvéderm Voluma XC treatment.

Cheek Enhancement Cost

If you are ready to see how enhancing the contour of your cheeks can improve your overall look, it is time to schedule a consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons. During consultation, your doctor  will evaluate your facial structure and listen to your aesthetic goals before preparing  a treatment protocol that will help you achieve your desired result, and calculate the cheek enhancement fillers cost. Whether it’s implants or cheek fillers, our providers will make sure to recommend the plan of action to help you look your best and be satisfied with the outcome.

Top 5 Plastic Surgery For Men

At South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery, women are not our only patients. We serve men seeking aesthetic improvement of various areas of their bodies and faces. Although men

generally do not like to reveal whether they have had cosmetic surgery, they are increasingly showing interest in these types of procedures. In recent years, men have displayed interest in cosmetic procedures such as tummy tuck, face lift and neck lift, hair transplant and laser hair removal, and more.  According to data collected by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the following were the top five plastic surgery procedures among men in 2013.

#1: Rhinoplasty Plastic Surgery For Men

A new study by the American Socieinjectable fillers

  • cheek augmentation
  • cheek fillers

ty of Plastic Surgeons has shown that men have been increasingly opting for rhinoplasty or nose reshaping surgery. In 2013 alone more than 57,000 male patients had it, constituting 26 percent of total Rhinoplasty patients in this year’s data.

Rhinoplasty is a type of cosmetic procedure which can involve removing excess cartilage and skin from parts of your nostrils to improve their shape as well as changing other aspects like bridge height and width, birth or trauma defects of the nose, and more.

“Eyelid lift” or Blepharoplasty is an effective way of removing sagging skin on the upper and lower eyelids. The procedure can be used by both men and women who want that perfect refreshed look! Currently, more than 30,000 male patients had blepharoplasty in 2013 because they wanted a youthful appearance around their eyes.

#3: Liposuction Plastic Surgery For Men

Over 23,500 men underwent liposuction in 2013 to remove stubborn fat that is resistant to healthy diet and exercise habits from their “problem areas.” This number is up 3 percent from the previous year.

#4: Breast Reduction: Gynecomastia Plastic Surgery for Men

Gynecomastia is a condition in males characterized by excessive glandular breast tissue, excess fat and skin throughout the chest, or a combination of these, which leads to the appearance of enlarged male breasts. In 2013, nearly 23,000 men had male breast reduction or gynecomastia surgery in the United States. Gynecomastia is an exclusively male plastic surgery. During the procedure, the surgeon performs liposuction of the breasts following by removing excess skin and glandular tissue, resulting in a more masculine appearance of the torso.

#5: Facelift Plastic Surgery For Men

As with eyelid surgery, facelift surgery is an effective way to achieve a more youthful, rejuvenated look throughout the face. Again, the numbers prove that men, too, want to stave off the hands of time. More than 12,500 males underwent a facelift procedure in 2013 — 7 percent more than the previous year. It’s common to combine facelift procedure with neck lift to ensure the best result.
