While breast implants can provide beautiful, long-lasting results, some patients develop a condition called capsular contracture—a tightening of the scar tissue around the implant that can cause discomfort, hardness, or changes in breast shape. If you’re experiencing these symptoms, you’re not alone, and effective solutions are available.
Capsular contracture repair surgery is a set of procedures, Capsulectomy, capsulotomy, and capsulorrhaphy that can be used to remove or release the hardened scar tissue, restore a softer, more natural feel to the breasts, and improve their appearance. In many cases, this procedure also allows us to replace the implant for the best possible results.
Our expert plastic surgeons customize every repair to your unique needs—whether you’re seeking relief from discomfort, correction of visible distortion, or both. By restoring softness, symmetry, and comfort, capsular contracture repair can help you feel confident and at ease in your body again.
At the South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery, we understand how frustrating and uncomfortable capsular contracture can be. That’s why every repair procedure we perform is customized to address your specific symptoms, goals, and anatomy.
Whether your priority is restoring a softer, more natural feel, correcting visible distortion, or replacing your implants for a refreshed look, our expert plastic surgeons will create a surgical plan designed just for you. Our approach focuses on removing or releasing the hardened scar tissue, restoring implant positioning, and enhancing overall breast aesthetics—all while prioritizing your comfort and safety.
Many of our patients notice an immediate improvement in softness and shape, as well as a renewed sense of confidence after their procedure.
Capsular contracture repair at the South Florida Center starts at $2,999 (anesthesia and surgeon fees not included). Final pricing will depend on your personalized treatment plan and whether implant replacement or additional procedures are included.
To make your transformation more accessible, we offer flexible financing through trusted third-party providers with simple application and approval processes. Our team is here to guide you every step of the way.
This involves fully removing the capsule (the scar tissue surrounding the implant). It’s often recommended for more severe cases or when the scar tissue is thick and contracted, giving the surgeon a clean space for implant replacement or repositioning.
Instead of removing the capsule entirely, the surgeon makes precise incisions within the scar tissue to release tightness, expand the implant pocket, and restore a softer, more natural breast shape. This option may be ideal for mild to moderate cases.
Used when the implant pocket is too large or has shifted position, this technique tightens and reshapes the capsule to improve implant placement and symmetry. It’s often combined with other repair methods for optimal results.
Your surgeon will determine which approach—or combination of approaches—will best resolve your capsular contracture while prioritizing your safety, comfort, and aesthetic outcome. During your consultation, we’ll walk you through each option in detail so you feel confident in your treatment plan.
Capsular contracture is a complication that can occur after breast augmentation or reconstruction. When any implant is placed in the body, a layer of scar tissue naturally forms around it—this is called the “capsule.” In most cases, the capsule is soft and flexible. However, in some patients, the scar tissue tightens and becomes firm, creating discomfort and sometimes distorting the shape of the breast.
In more advanced cases, capsular contracture can impact posture, restrict movement, and cause ongoing discomfort—making repair surgery an important step toward restoring comfort, symmetry, and confidence.
The breast looks and feels soft and natural. There is no visible distortion, and no signs of capsular contracture.
The breast still appears normal but feels slightly firm to the touch. There’s no visible distortion, and most patients aren’t bothered by symptoms at this stage.
The breast feels firm and begins to look distorted in shape. This stage can affect symmetry, projection, and overall aesthetics.
The breast is hard, visibly misshapen, and often painful. This is the most severe stage, and surgical intervention is typically necessary to restore comfort and appearance.
Understanding your Baker grade helps your surgeon create a targeted treatment plan—whether that involves releasing the capsule, removing it entirely, or reshaping the implant pocket for better long-term results.
Capsular contracture can cause constant discomfort, from aching tenderness to a tight, pulling sensation in the chest. Repair surgery releases this tension, restoring softness and easing daily pain.
Hardened scar tissue can distort implant shape or position. By removing or releasing the capsule and replacing the implant if needed, repair surgery helps create a balanced, natural-looking result.
A firm, constricted capsule can make certain movements uncomfortable—especially when stretching or lying on your stomach. After repair, most patients notice immediate improvement in comfort during everyday activities.
Addressing capsular contracture early can protect your implants and maintain their appearance, helping you enjoy your results for years to come.
When breasts look and feel more natural, clothing and swimwear fit better—no more feeling restricted by tightness or asymmetry.
Beyond the physical improvements, capsular contracture repair helps you feel at ease in your own body again—restoring the confidence you had after your original augmentation.

Capsular contracture repair surgery is a procedure that removes or releases hardened scar tissue (the capsule) that can form around a breast implant. This scar tissue can cause the breast to feel firm, look misshapen, or even become painful. The repair restores a softer, more natural breast shape and can improve comfort.
Capsular contracture occurs when your body’s normal scar tissue response becomes overly aggressive, tightening and squeezing the breast implant. Causes may include infection, implant rupture, bleeding around the implant, or simply the body’s individual healing response.
Common signs include breast firmness, visible distortion in breast shape, discomfort or pain, and breasts sitting higher than normal. In severe cases, the breast can feel hard to the touch.
Your surgeon will perform a physical examination and may recommend imaging, such as ultrasound or MRI, to assess the scar tissue and implant condition before creating a repair plan.
Treatment often involves capsulectomy (removing the capsule) or capsulotomy (releasing the capsule). Many patients also choose to replace their implants during the same surgery to restore symmetry and improve results.
In many cases, yes. Implant replacement ensures the best cosmetic outcome, especially if the existing implant is damaged, outdated, or no longer meets your aesthetic goals.
Most procedures take between 1 and 3 hours, depending on the severity of the contracture and whether implants are being replaced at the same time.
Recovery typically involves 1–2 weeks of downtime before returning to light activities, with full healing over 3–6 months. Wearing a supportive surgical bra and avoiding strenuous chest activity are key to protecting your results.
While recurrence is possible, your surgeon will take steps to minimize the risk—such as using precise surgical techniques, replacing old implants, and in some cases, recommending or prescribe a medication that might help reduce the chance of re-occurrence.
The Natrelle Confidence Plus® warranty… provides a free 10-year replacement for capsular contracture (Baker Grade III/IV) for both affected and contralateral implants. It also includes financial assistance for certain complications, such as rupture and late seroma, and coverage for BIA-ALCL.
Choosing an experienced, expert surgeon, following all aftercare instructions, and scheduling regular check-ups can help reduce your risk.
You may be a candidate if you have firmness, discomfort, or visible distortion in one or both breasts after implant surgery, and are in good overall health to undergo a procedure.
The first step is to schedule a consultation with one of our expert plastic surgeons. We’ll evaluate your symptoms, review your implant history, and create a personalized surgical plan to restore your comfort and confidence.
